Edible Manhattan did an interesting article in their January/February issue on the pros and cons (and the possibility of) New York grocery chains carrying wine. Currently, wine and liquour can only be purchased at independently licensed stores, not food stores. And I have to admit that when I first moved from California to New York five years ago I found this to be inconvenient. But I have grown to love the small independent wine stores. There is usually a greater variety of small producers like ourselves and less of the mass market wines, and the owners are very knowledgable and give excellent recommendations based on your specific tastes. But with the state in a budget crisis, this issue which would bring in additional revenue for the state, is sure to become a hot topic. Read the article by Edible Manhattan for more on this topic.
